¡Familia!

Another week has flown by here in Madero! Lots of hard work, sweat, and Mexican food once again. Haha, but this week was really good. Time has really started to fly and I cannot believe that it is already June! It seriously seems like yesterday that I graduated, had Miles and Hadley's and my grad party, and all that good stuff! It was funny, we were walking to an appointment last week I just for a second thought about how much things can change in a year. Now I'm here in another country, speaking a different language and dedicating my time to missionary work.  Haha, a little different from grad parties and graduation.

This week Elder Castro and I have really worked hard with less actives, actives, and investigators alike to get every single kid age 14 to 18 who is willing, signed up for EFY. The session director for EFY here is in our ward, Hermano Robledo, and he's straight sick wit it. We found a new family through a reference from a member in the ward. Their name is la Familia Hernandez Boeta they have 3 kids that are EFY age but they haven't seemed super interested in the church as of yet. We went over there with both Hno y Hna Robledo one night this week and showed them a video with a bunch of EFY activities and such and then Hno Robledo straight went to work, haha. The man was like lightning in a bottle, he was sellin the program like a pro, but it was aweosme and all three of their kids really got excited about it and are signed up and ready to go.

Also, in the last few weeks we have been teaching our neighbors that live in the same block of houses as we do. In total there are 4 of the family members that are listening to us. There names are Carlos, Jessy, Teresa, and Aurelia. Carlos and Jessy are kids and Teresa is their aunt, Aurelia is the Grandma. Jessy and Teresa have been super interested and have been reading and praying which has been really good. We have committed them to be baptized the 23 of June, so that is really exciting! Merced and Yedid have hit a little bit of a wall. We have had a little trouble being in contact with them but were hoping to teach them tonight. One of the biggest challenge with investigators whether in the US or Mexico, or prob anywhere in the world is getting them to church for sure. Oh, one more note, I'm really hopíng my former comp BROTHER J Rindy is reading this because this will only be funny for you, but I finally taught Sergio that the phrase, "Nice to meet you!" is not an appropriate way to end every conversation in English, hahaha.

The pictures of Lauren's grad party and graduation were beautiful and it looks like it was a great time. The yard from what I could see looks super good! Ryan's doing me proud on that. Mom, major congrats on the Charter school job! Third grade will be very fun and you will do great, that will for sure keep you very busy this summer. Also that is so fun that G Pa flew in for graduation.

I have thought about Miles a lot this week, hoping that he's surviving, haha. Just remember everyone, the first three days in the MTC feel like an eternity, just keep pushing through and it will get better haha.

Something has pressed very heavily on my mind the last few days and I want every single member of the church who reads this to take this challenge. I had this thought one night as I was going to sleep and it really has hit me hard since then. The thought is this: Members of the church are the key to missionary work. Missionary work is SOOOOO much more effective when the members are actively involved. Also it is a lot of fun. I think back to the lessons with Travis and Stuart at our house and those were seriously so much fun. So this is the other thought I had, I don't know who, and I don't know where, but it is very clear to me that there is someone out there who is going to read my letter, that has a friend, family member or someone that is very ready to hear the messege of the gospel. Now I have no idea who this is, but there is someone and they need to be invited by a member to their home, to hear the missionaries and accept the message. So in order to make sure that we don't miss this very prepared person here is what I want, without exception, every one of you to do. Tonight, begin with a prayer to gain inspiration, then sit down with your family and make a list of the people who aren't members that come to mind. In the next week I want you to pray to know who from this list you need to invite into your home to hear the missionaries. Before next Monday, the spirit will tell you who it is that needs to hear. By next Monday I want you to have an appointment set with both the person or persons you have chosen and also with the missionaries. I promise you all that the blessings of missionary work are very real and not only reserved for full time missionaries. If you will do this, you will see blessings in all phases of you life.

I love you all so much. I want to hear the experiences that you have with this so hit my momma up and tell her what happened so she can tell me. All Is Well.

Fammmmmmilllly:

What's crackin this week in the USA? Haha, I hope all is well, it sure sounds like it is. Man, every Monday when I come and sit down in this little cyberg in downtown Madero, Mexico I just can't believe that another week has flown by and I'm here again. Also, every week at this time I am also reminded of how much I truly love each and every one of you. But before I get into how this week went, I wanna tell y'all (yeah I still got some Tennesse in me, lolzz) a little something about my best friend Miles Adams. I don't know if he will read this or not but I've been thinking about him a tonnnn in the last few days as he gets ready to hit the MTC. I can't believe it's been so long since me and that dude were kicking it in our 3rd grade Northside classroom. I am so so proud and blessed to have a friend like him. He is going to be an incredible missionary, and a true servant of the Lord. I have always admired the way the he has always stood for and done what is right. He has a way of doing so that is not boastful and he is a true leader. He is going to do incredible things for the people of Paris, France. Miles, best of luck brother #143.

I love reading your letters every single week and hearing how well everyone is doing back in Fallon. It's such a blessing to know that all is well back at home and to hear about how awesome everyone is doing; all learning, growing and progressing. haha, Hearing the wasabi story is hilarious about Ryan, Hadley and Stu. It reminds me so much of some of our classic trips to the Wok with all my Boyz. Speaking of which, I hope Elder Special K is doing well. I sent him a letter right before I left TN and haven't heard from him since. Someone should (through Shelly) give him my address here.

So a little health update on me that I forgot from last week. Elder Rindy and I went to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor last week because I was having problems hearing. Turns out I had a ton of ear wax up against my ear drum that we were able to see on a TV screen (so dope, I know) all from using Q-tips to try and clean my ears. Apparently that is really bad, haha. But he cleaned them out really well and it was dope to watch on the TV. Maybe more interesting (and a lot less gross) than that is that I am now weighing in at a whooping 167 lbs.... If I remember correctly the last time I weighed this much I was a freshman in high school. Hahaha. I have dropped a ton of weight. I also have some ridiculous tan lines at my neck and my forearms. The heat is super heavy but it's a ton of fun haha.

So Elder Castro and I have had a straight sick week! We have truly seen miracles. He doesn't have much experience in the mission and neither do I, but I am so blessed because he is such a good missionary and we are working crazy hard! Elder Rindlisbacher and I were able to really lay a good foundation for this transfer here in Francia the past six weeks because of the reactivation efforts and now Elder Castro and I are working to really expand our pool of investigators. The best way to do so is through the members and we have some really awesome ones, but most of our time has been spent contacting trying to find people. Last Wednesday, Elder Castro and I were planning and we prayed to know where to go and who to contact. We both felt good about the same area and prayed again to be able to find two people ready to hear and accept the gospel. Well, the next day we went up to the area and started contacting. After we knocked the first door of that street, we heard someone calling to us. Two men were standing out in front of a house calling to us. They wanted to know who we were and what church we represented. They wanted to talk to us about our beliefs and so they invited us in. It was a man and his son, both named Roberto and the father's wife Irma. We couldn't believe it! Within 3 minutes of tracting, two people had invited us in. It turns out that all of their family has quite a bit of interest. We taught him the Restoration and invited him to an activity we were in charge of for our ward this last Saturday. This led to another miracle when they all gladly accepted and said they would also bring other friends. Well, Saturday night came... and we ended up with 50 or 60 people at our activity at the Church, 13 of which were non-member investigators, and another 7 were less actives! Elder Castro and I were able to give a tour of our Church building and teach an awesome lesson on Lehi's Tree of Life Vision and ways that we can all hold to the rod! It was such a blessing.

As for Merced and Yedid, they were not at church and we are going to move their baptism back probably a week so that they can really be prepared, but they are still on the right track. It was a really awesome week here in Madero. As to answer Shelly's question, we only cover Barrio Francia, but I would love to know what ward Hub's comp is from. There are two stakes in Madero but I would love to know. It was an awesome week and I love you all so much. I hope that all is well back at home. I love each letter I receive. Mi Familia,

What is up? Man, sure sounds like it was a super busy week in Fallon! That's awesome, it sounds like everyone is doing so well.

 

I am happy to say that I finally did receive an enormous stack of mail from various family and friends! That was awesome!  It was so great to hear from all of you. You were right Mom, Brandon's letters were absolutely hilarious and I learned a ton from them! I'll talk about that in just a minute. But thank you so much everyone for your letters and support, I love you all so so much.

 

So awesome to hear that Had went through the temple! That's awesome, I'm stoked for him. I can't believe that next week Miles hits the MTC! I bet he's super ready to leave haha, that dead period waiting time would be super tough I bet.  Sounds like an awesome week!

 

Today is the first day of my second exchange here in Tampico. Elder Rindlisbacher goes home this week and so I knew that I would be staying here in Francia and receiving a new Latino companion. Today I got my new companion. His name is Elder Castro, he is from Honduras and he got to Mexico only one exchange before I did! We are both super young mission wise and President Call said he's never put two missionaries so young together before. But everyone has told me what an awesome missionary he is and he really seems like he is! We're both really excited to start working together. I am also sad to be splitting up from Elder Rindlisbacher, he is such an awesome missionary and example and we will be friends for the rest of our lives. But we have had a lot of success in this week and Elder Rindlisbacher and I were really teaching well together. We found a new family that we're teaching named la familia Sosa Cervantes. They are super cool, they have 3 kids ages 13, 10 and 8. The two oldest are boys and they are like super interested in learning about the gospel! We have been teaching them and they are reading and progressing well. They weren't at church yesterday though so we will have to work on that for this week, haha. Merced and Yedid are progressing well and have a baptismal date set for June 9th so Elder Castro and I will be working towards that which is exciting!

 

But this week I have learned a ton from reading Brandon's letters that I got. He talked in one about helping investigators learn to recognize the spirit by asking them to describe how they feel both before and right at the end of the lesson. When they feel better at the end of the lesson he talked about teaching them the fruits of the spirit and helping them recognize that the reason for the difference is that the spirit is in the room. This is something that we did all week and it worked so well. It was awesome and it helped me recognize the spirit in the lessons better as well. It was great advice!

 

I miss you all but everything is great in Madero! Thanks so much for all the letters, prayers, love and support.

Fam

Ok, so talking to you guys yesterday was soooooo much fun! Like seriously it was for sure a highlight haha. It amazes me how everything is so much the same with us even though it has been nearly 5 months and I am currently in a different country. Everyone sounds so good. What a blessing it is to have a family (and I include extended and friends in that group) that is such a source of strength, support, encouragement and love.

That is another thing I have learned since I have been down here is the fact that not everyone has that same system of support that I do, and every day I become more cognitively aware of the fact that I am the person that I am today because of three things:  the gospel of Jesus Christ, my family, and my friends. I sometimes wish that I could take credit for being who I am, but I truly can't.  The examples I have had in my life; beginning primarily with the Savior and then my parents, have truly shaped me into the person I am today. Each and every day I truly strive to live and work in such a way that each one of you would be proud. You have all done so much for me that I feel that doing anything less than making you 100% proud would constitute at least partial failure. I love you all so much.

Another thing that I am continually learning here on my mission is the value of tribulations and trials in our life. I have come to love the beginning part of Romans 5 where Paul says that he glories in tribulations because he knows that tribulation worketh patience. This is a lesson that I continue to learn every single day because by no means is missionary work easy.  If it were easy, I would feel a little shorted on the experience because you can truly learn so much more through trials and tribulations. We are all here in this life to learn, grow and progress. Many times the only way to obtain true progression and change for the better in this life is by learning through tribulations. Let us all try and remember this fact as we all will undoubtedly experience trials and tribulations in the coming days, weeks, months etc... Rely on God, be patient, and find ways that we can learn through tribulation.

One last thing, so yesterday for our third hour of church they did a presentation on EFY, which will be in the Tampico area for the first time ever. It made me think back to my EFY years with all my boys. I'm thinking that sometime in the coming summers that I'm gonna wanna be living in Midway and counseling at EFY if I can get some dudes on board with me haha. Nah, we will see. Also where is my boy Scotty Hutchings gonna be going on his mish? I love you all and know that all is well. I loved all the pics you sent momma thanks so much.

Wow, another one in the books and you guys are so right, time is really flying. I thought about that too this week how Mitch, Mason, Kev, and Hub have been out a year already! That is straight insane I remember them leaving like it was yesterday. I'm trying now to start a letter correspondence with my boyz Elders Hubbard and Johnston down here now that we can mail more frequently within the same country haha.

But this week was good, not gonna lie, it was tough, but nobody ever has said that a mission is easy and we were really blessed still.  The tough part is here in Mexico is you contact people in the street a lot and you try and get return appointments when you can go to their houses. It's tough when these people aren't at their house or tell you to come back later. Needless to say, we had a lot of appointments fall this week, but this ended up working out in the end because it gave us time to go and do visits with some less active members and part member families. Ernestina had a little trouble this week and wasn't at church, and at the last minute, Gaudalupe couldn't go either.  But the highlight of the week is last Monday night, we found a golden family. Their names are Merced and Yedid (Merced's the guy) and they have a little two year-old daughter. They are sooooooooooooooooo prepared. They read 10 chapters in the BofM in between our first and second lessons with them and they are so awesome. Yedid has read the Bible all the way through twice and has really liked the way the B of M clarifies the Bible. They were at Church this week along with 70 something others! This was a miracle considering that three very active families were out of town and we still have some less actives that we can get to church. We can very easily have 100 plus people in this ward that just a few weeks ago had only 30 or 40 people attending. There are so many awesome people down here in this ward that I seriously love! Some super sick families and the people love missionaries a lot.

Elder Rindlisbacher and I have had such a fun time this transfer. He is seriously such an awesome comp and friend and example. We have a blast every single day.

It sounds like everything is all good back in Fallon. I'm so excited for Miles and Hadley to enter the MTC, they are going to be really happy to see each other in there haha. Just remember, the mission is incredible and so is the MTC, but it won't be easy.  I love you all so much and love hearing from all of you so so much. Press forward and rely on the Lord, have faith, obey the commandments, and then watch miracles happen. Always believe in miracles. Always.

Dear Mi Familia,

¿Que Onda amigos? Haha I sat here and legitimately LOLd here in the Cyberg in downtown Madero with a bunch of people looking at me as I read your stories of Ryan and Hadley's prom. That's hilarious. I think its so sick that Miles and Had still kick it at our house quite a bit. I bet Ryan and the whole fam love that. How tall is Ryan right now? He looks taller and less skinny in a lot of those pics. I can't tell you how much I love reading your emails each week with the updates on how everyone is doing. I don't think about it an awful lot during the week but when Mondays come around, I can't wait to come and read and then write. It sounds like both prom groups had an awful lot of fun, lots of good times there.

That's so fun that Grandma has been in town; I bet that was great. Every time we go to the mission office and I see the senior couple in the office I think back to GMa and GPas mission and how much they loved it.

That's sweet that you taught Gospel Principles Mom! Not gonna lie, as a missionary, you learn how important having a good Gospel Principles teacher is. Elder Rindlisbacher and I are super lucky, our ward has a super super good gospel principles teacher that throws down easy-to-understand, involving, spiritual lessons each week, which is such a relief that we don't have to worry about that when we bring investigators and less actives.

So Elder Rindlisbacher and I have been working non stop since we have been here and it has been HARD work. We had 0 investigators to start, in an incredibly small ward, with tons of less actives; but this week, we saw miracles. We have been working non stop, trying to find new investigators, trying to visit less actives and part-member families, trying to find people that will even listen to our message, and for a lot of our time since we've been here, we hadn't seen a lot of results. We are super close to downtown Madero and there are tons of churches downtown in the Centro so its been hard to find people even willing to listen for a lot of our time here. Elder Rindlisbacher (who is like one of the three wise men, he's a total stud, haha) said this is the hardest time he's ever had in his mission to find people to teach. But we've just kept working every single second, kept contacting in the street, kept visiting and teaching less actives, kept obeying, and kept having faith that everything would work out; and it did!  Late this week we found an older lady named Ernestina. She is old and looks like it, but she is totally there mentally. She listened to us along with her helper who lives with her named Olga. We found them Friday and set a return appointment with them for Saturday. They read the chapter in the Book of Mormon we gave them and they came to church on Sunday. Gaudalupe had a great week as well, she is very convinced that we have the authority to act in God's name, and also that the Book of Mormon is true, but she is very Catholic and is having a hard time leaving that behind, but she is praying and reading and she came to church as well!

So like I said, week one in Barrio Francia we had 38 members in attendance. This week we had 69! It was an incredible miracle. We had like 5 different less active families there, 5 non members, and a bunch of other less actives who are part member families. This week, and really my whole mission so far, has built my testimony of the small and simple things in the church. So many of the less actives in our ward only want for somebody to care that they are there, that's all. It shows me the importance of things like home teaching, personal prayer, and scripture reading.  All things that we do and as we do them, we build our foundation on the rock of Christ. We must remember to always do these things and also to help those who are in our ward family to do them as well. But it was so awesome to have so many members at church. We still have so much more work to do and we are finding more people every day.

I am so lucky to have Elder Rindlisbacher, we get along super well and he is such an awesome example of hard work and obedience. We have a blast every single day.

Thanks for the updates on my missionary friends. If someone will holla at me where all my college friends are serving at it would be greatly appreciated. And to everyone serving missions soon it's pretty simple, work hard, obey, have faith, work hard, obey, have faith and if you do this, you qualify for the spirit and you will see miracles. Don't forget it either.

I love you all so much and I love hearing from you so much. I will let you know when mail comes for sure. I have really missed hearing from Brandon, Lisa and G ma every week haha. I love you all and know that all is well. Remember to have faith and press forward.

Que Dice Familia,

Another week has flown by in Mexico! This place is truly incredible, if anyone ever thinks about complaining about life in America, I would encourage you to take a trip down to your nearest Mexican border town to see how humbly people truly live down here. Very very humble living, but lots of very nice people.

 

Elder Rindlisbacher and I opened an area, meaning that we are two new missionaries in the area with no investigators or really no feel for the area. Only the two of us live in our apartment, and it's not really an apartment, more of a room. We don't have hot water, but we do have a bathroom. Our entire living quarters is probably about 2/3 the size of Ryan's and my room at home haha. But we do have air conditioning and a washer! Pres and Sister Call have really worked hard to upgrade the housing since they have been here, so most of the houses now have tile floors instead of cement (ours does have tile).  Our area here covers one whole ward and about 10x15 square blocks of pretty near downtown Madero. It has a deceptively high number of people that live in the area because sooooooo many people live in one building haha.

 

The food is incredible, the tortillas are sooo good and so are the beans and rice.  It's like my dream meal, I haven't eaten anything super crazy yet haha. Lots of chicken, beans, rice, and tortillas. We are on foot for our whole area, but its not that big, we only take a taxi if we need to go to the offices or shopping or something like that. If you ever want to get your fill of adrenaline you should go to a big Mexican city and ride in a taxi haha.  They have the worst drivers I have ever seen here. The humidity is very very heavy here but it hasn't gotten super hot here yet, but this summer it should get really really hot. Oh, that's another thing, the fruit here is incredible. All the trees here are mango, orange, coconut, and lime trees. The mangoes are sooo good, super sweet.

 

We are very fortunate because our Church building is only two blocks out of our area but the ward is very very small, attendance wise. We have lots of less active members that we are visiting and getting to know. This last week as a way to get to know the members and try and get referrals of people to teach, we had Family Home Evening activities with some less active families in the ward. This was a lot of fun, we did a lot of object lessons with the kids of the families to try and get them involved and excited about church. It made me think of some of the lessons that Elders Snow and Toland did at our house (although I haven't eaten cinnamon yet, haha). But that went really well and we have 4 less actives at church this week.

 

We also have found quite a few good investigators to teach. One of them is named Gaudalupe. She is a 50ish year old women. We gave her sick son a blessing and she has a ton of faith and loves our message. She is very humble and is reading the Book of Mormon.  My Spanish is honestly really good. I still have to listen really really hard to understand some people but I speak pretty well.

 

This Saturday, Elder Neil Anderson visited the mission and we had a meeting with him. He gave such an awesome talk! It was all about the power of the Atonement in our lives. The very real power of the Atonement, to not only cleanse us from sin, but also to carry us through every trial or hard time that we encounter. He said that the more we study and learn about the Atonement, the more powerful our testimony becomes of it, and there is no more powerful way to touch an investigator than through testimony of the Atonement. I encourage everyone to try to learn apply the love of Christ through His atonement.
